What sports scholarships exist in Spain in 2026, how to get one step by step, and the truth about who they are really for and what to do if you fall short.
There’s a moment in nearly every promising athlete’s life when the family does the sums and takes fright. Licences, registration fees, travel, gear, training camps, maybe a move to a new club or city. And the logical question surfaces: “isn’t there a scholarship for this?”.
There is, but probably not the one you’re picturing. This article sets out what sports scholarships really exist in Spain, how to get one step by step, and the part almost nobody spells out: who they’re actually for, and what you can do if, like the vast majority, you don’t yet qualify.
What a sports scholarship is
A sports scholarship is financial support awarded to an individual athlete, usually based on their performance or level, so they can devote themselves to competing. Don’t confuse it with two things that look similar:
- A sports subsidy. Public money aimed at organisations (clubs, federations) not individuals. If you’re a club looking for funds, that’s your route, but it works differently.
- General sports aid. A catch-all that may include gear, medical services, board at a high-performance centre or academic exemptions — not necessarily cash in hand.
The distinction matters because each has its own call, its own requirements and its own body. Applying in the wrong place is the first way to waste your time.
What sports scholarships exist in Spain
The bulk of scholarships for athletes in Spain is public and state-run, coordinated by the Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD), Spain’s state body for sport. These are the main families:

How to get a sports scholarship, step by step
If your level fits, here’s how to get a sports scholarship without getting lost in the paperwork:
- Get official recognition of your level. Almost everything hinges on holding high-level (DAN, national) or high-performance (DAR, regional) athlete status. Without that label, most doors won’t even open.
- Talk to your federation. It channels much of the aid and manages the places and grants at high-performance centres. Your federation knows which calls apply to you.
- Watch the calls. State scholarships are published in the official gazette (BOE) and on the CSD website, with fixed deadlines. There’s no exception for a late application, so note the dates the moment they open.
- If you’re studying, explore the dual career. Many universities recognise high-level athletes with exemptions, academic flexibility and fee reductions. It’s one of the more accessible routes.
- Prepare your paperwork early. Results, licences, merits, certificates. An incomplete application falls, however good you are.

Here’s the knot the article promised. Look at the table again: almost every official sports scholarship requires you to be high-level or high-performance. Olympians, Paralympians, athletes with DAN/DAR status, places at technical centres. It’s a tiny club.
Sports scholarships exist, but they’re for those who’ve already arrived. For the 95% still on the way, there’s no scholarship waiting.
And that 95%, the standout junior, the local club’s bright hope, the family paying for the season out of pocket, is exactly who needs the help most and whom the scholarship system leaves out. It’s not a fault of yours or of your application: it’s how it’s designed. Applying is well worth it, but betting a whole season on a panel choosing you is a poor strategy.
What to do if you don’t (yet) have a scholarship
The good news is that funding a grassroots athlete doesn’t hang on a call for applications. It hangs on building support you actually control:
